Automation is Everywhere
Nowadays, it seems that every facility design project involves evaluating or proposing automated warehousing solutions. While it is exciting to explore the latest technologies, our role as supply chain experts to make sure our clients are investing in the right solution. One thing is certain – every business has its particularities and not all solutions are appropriate, if any at all!
Why Automate?
The first question to ask should be – why automate at all? Quantitative reasons usually drive this question. However, more and more clients are considering less tangible, qualitative reasons as part of their “quest” for automation.
Quantitative Reasons – The Numbers Don’t Lie
- Boosting Throughput: Automated systems can dramatically increase packaging speed and output. Think high-speed robotic pick-and-place systems and automated case packers capable of handling incredible volumes.
- Storage Space Optimization: Automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) optimize your warehouse’s storage space by taking better advantage of vertical space – leading to major increases in the overall capacity of your existing facility.
Qualitative Reasons – Beyond the Bottom Line
- Labor Challenges: In today’s tight labor market, automation offers a solution to staffing shortages. PACK EXPO will highlight how collaborative robots can work safely alongside human workers, taking on repetitive tasks and freeing up employees for more complex roles in the warehouse.
- Consistency and Quality: Automation eliminates human error and absenteeism, ensuring consistent, high-quality outcomes every time. This is sure to be a major theme at PACK EXPO, where vendors will showcase vision systems and other quality control technologies that integrate into automated lines.
- Product Security: Some specific solutions like Vertical Lift Modules (VLM) enhance the security of high-value products in your warehouse. Through integration with racking systems, carousels, or other material handling equipment, VLMs safeguard moving inventory and limit access to specific trays. Programmed access control using badges, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), or Electronic Key System (EKS) readers also ensures that only authorized personnel can access stored items.
- Enhanced Safety: Automated systems can handle hazardous materials and perform tasks that pose risks to human workers, improving workplace safety.
Finding the Right Automation Solution
At PACK EXPO, we will surely see that an abundance of automation, but it’s important to note that “more automation” isn’t always the answer. The key is finding the right automation solution for your specific needs.
Your solution needs to address the quantitative constraints and objectives of the business, but also take into consideration certain product characteristics like size & weight, the handling units, the order profile, etc. Rarely will a single solution cover all business requirements, and the rise of automation orchestration software (such as Onomatic), which helps maximize the efficiency of multi-system operations, is a testament to this.
Excitement of new technologies sometimes overshadows the foundations needed to operate them.
Excellent master data, strong processes and software integration are the minimum requirements to incorporate automation.
Here is an example: a client approached LIDD seeking to minimize their warehouse footprint with an AS/RS system. However, their relatively low throughput (500 pallets stored, 1,000 pallets shipped per week) meant that a complex AS/RS was overkill. Instead, we recommended a more cost-effective solution: a combination of selective and dense racking for fast movers. This approach provided sufficient densification at a fraction of the cost of the AS/RS system, highlighting that the most technologically advanced solution isn’t always the best fit.
That’s where LIDD comes in.
