Supply Chain Infrastructure: The Missing Link Connecting Food Insecurity and Food Waste

Food waste and food insecurity are significant environmental and social problems. Despite the abundance of available food, surplus often cannot reach those who are hungry because it’s in the wrong place or the wrong format. This quarter’s LIDD Insider explores LIDD’s work to improve supply chains to address both of these issues.

Investing in warehouses, production lines, and software systems allows food banks to move and transform surplus food from its bulk form into units suitable for household consumption. This investment is necessary to handle the ever-growing demand, with over 2 million Canadians visiting a food bank monthly in 2024. By helping organizations like Harvest Manitoba create scalable infrastructure roadmaps, LIDD is enabling them to increase efficiency, reduce operational costs, and build long-term resilience to fulfill their mission of feeding people and fostering resilience across North America.
